Richard Sachs, Columbia College '49, will read from his memoir of a closeted life in a tumultuous world of the 1940s and the decades following. He will read about his sheltered, panicky life during the Great Depression; how as a child and an adult, always anxious and terrified of discovery, he personalized the world tragedies of violence, war and poverty; his years of clandestine, lonely, anonymous sex; the fictitious safety of marriage, children and a family business; and finally, slowly emerging from the closet at 58, he will read about his second, happy marriage to the man he loves. Richard will be interviewed by prominent author-journalist Eric Marcus. Dean Jeffrey Peck of the CUNY Weissman School of Arts and Sciences will moderate the Q&A program.
