Greater Boston GLBT Ivies and Friends presents:

Gay Secrets of the MFA (private tour)

Wednesday, February 8, 2017

6:15-8:30pm

Museum of Fine Arts

465 Huntington Ave, Boston, MA

Look for the group in the MFA ground-floor rotunda, 6:00-6:15.

Come explore the MFA's gay side with Harvard Professor Andrew Lear!

In art circles, it is well known that Boston's MFA has the world's greatest collection of same-sex Classical art, a collection started by the great early 20th century gay collector Edward Perry Warren, also the owner of the British Museum's Warren cup.  It is less well known that the MFA's collections are extraordinarily rich in LGBT art of other cultures as well.  On this tour, we will see LGBT art ranging from a luridly erotic Renaissance Christ to an intersex figure that (we bet) you've never noticed in a famous Impressionist canvas.

Andrew Lear is the foremost expert on same-sex love in ancient Greek art.  In the last few years, he has started Oscar Wilde Tours (OscarWildeTours.com), a company dedicated to showing travelers the gay past.  He has spoken on LGBT history at the British National Portrait Gallery, and he has led a series of MFA tours for the Harvard Gender & Sexuality Caucus last year.

Note that this is a private event, not an MFA event.  Museum entry is free on Wednesday evenings (after 4), so you can just enter without explaining that you are on a tour, and the MFA staff will not have information.  We will be waiting for you in the rotunda, starting at 6.  Please leave yourself extra time for entrance and coatroom lines:  these can be long on free evenings.

Price:  $25.  Because these tours are very popular, it is necessary to reserve/prepay, which you can do by clicking on 'Book Now' from this page:

www.OscarWildeTours.com/museum-fine-arts/

Please reserve your spot there for Feb 8th when you RSVP on the Meetup, to make sure it is not yet sold out!

NOTE:

This event is organized by Oscar Wilde Tours for the Greater Boston Ivies & Friends Meetup, the Harvard Gender & Sexuality Caucus, and the Cambridge Men's Group. If you cannot make it on Feb. 8th, HGSC is also hosting one on Feb. 22nd. Use the same 'Book Now' button as above.
